Considerations When Purchasing Wire Wheels

By Margaret Fox

One of the cheapest and most effective ways to enhance the appearance of a car is to fit new wheels. Many vehicles will be supplied with steel or alloys and fitting a set of aftermarket rims can improve its looks. There are many firms available that can supply you with wire wheels and there are a few things to be considered before you buy.

For the most cars, these rims can be brought off the shelf in many car parts retailers in your neighborhood. There are many options to choose from and you will find something that suits most vehicles. You will also find wire rims offered for sale on the internet and these retailers will usually have huge stocks that are ready to be shipped.

If you do not wish to spend a large sum of money, there is the option of buying a used set of rims. From around 200 dollars you can buy these from local scrap yards and garages and they will be ready to fit. Some may require restoration and they can be re chromed or coated by a company that specializes in reconditioning.

Bespoke rims can also be manufactured and purchased for your car if you are looking for something special. These handmade rims start from around 2000 dollars for four and will increase in price depending on style, finish and time needed to manufacture. The fixings such as the spinners, center nuts and caps can also be customized to your specifications.

If you are upgrading to new rims, a little careful research should be done before you buy. If the diameter of the new wheels is larger than the ones that are currently fitted, you should check that they will fit without hitting the bodywork. Other modifications that may be required will be adjustments to the springs and brakes.

When you fit a new set of rims, it is important to check that the appropriate tools are also purchased and kept in the car. Many will have a spinner or single nut to secure the wheel and the original tools supplied with your vehicle may not fit. Many of the suppliers can provide these tools when you are purchasing rims but you should check beforehand.

The maintenance of rims is another thing to take into account and it is very important. It can often take hours to properly clean the spokes and this can often be tricky. Many owners use an old shoelace or will tear up old shirts to wrap around the spoke for the hard to reach areas. It is also important to remove them from time to time and clean behind to prevent any corrosion.

It is a good idea to ask the advice of a qualified engineer to make sure that any changes to your car are done correctly before fitting new rims. Your retailer or local auto store will also be happy to advise you and check what needs to e done. It is advisable to store the wheels that were originally supplied with the car and they can be re fitted if you change the vehicle in the future.
