Key Factors When Selecting A Filter Press

By Virginia Peterson

Filter presses are widely used in different applications and industries around the world for separating liquids and solids. Industries uses this equipment includes mineral processing, chemical, pharmaceuticals, aggregate processing, water and waste treatments, food and beverage and many other things. Due to its effectiveness, industries have effectively managed the materials waste separations. There are many factors to consider when choosing a Filter Press so individuals will have to conduct research in order top find the right one for their applications.

Filtrate water discharge option. The liquid when remove during the dewatering on the equipment will through filter cloths that was mounted on plate surfaces then exit through internal channels or ports. For those that has closed filtrate discharge, the liquid will pass from the surfaces of the plates to small channels with many corners.

The style of frames and plates where being plagued by many problems when the time comes to remove the dewatered solid materials from frames. Though the frame design and plate are still widely used in various applications and industries, the new ones employ membrane or recessed designs which is more popular. Individuals must determine between recessed and membrane presses.

Another option to keep in mind is open filtrate discharge. This option allows the operator to observe the cleanliness and quantities of waters that is discharged from plates. If the filter cloths worn or damaged excessively, dirty waters will exit from the presses and once its been detected, the operator will determine immediately the area of a damaged cloth.

As with many equipment, the first process of keeping the filter presses to fully function is by changing their oils. It will not matter how much the budget is or how experienced the maintenance crew is, it would be difficult to overcome the trails for an improperly sized equipment or poorly planned facilities. It will be best to follow the right process illustrated from the manufacturers manual.

Feed Pumps. All types of filter presses are being fed by different kinds of feed pumps to force the liquid and solid into the spaces of plates. There is a force or pressure that will separate the solids and liquids. The most common type is the centrifugal pump. It comes with one or single stage centrifugal pumps.

Another one common pump for filter presses is positive displacement pump. The pump machine used will control the maximum pressure and the flow of slurry which is fed to the equipment. Higher flows and pressures will increase the capacities of the equipment.

Researching will determine the right equipment for your needs. Even though there are many choices to choose from, the best way to know the best filter presses is by spending some time in doing research. Asking some friends and family that has done the process in the past can share their opinions about the matter.

Budgeting is another aspect that needs to be considered carefully. This equipment does not come in cheap especially if the materials are high quality. To be precise on the budget, make sure to take the time to make a few calls and ask for estimation to prepare your finances before buying one.
