By Stephanie Hayes

Special skills are demanded of coach drivers. Getting the Commercial Drivers License opens incredible employment and earning opportunities to grandaunts. These opportunities include better pay, career advancement and exposure to different working environments. The quality and infrastructure of bus driving school you enroll determines the trajectory you take with your career.

There are different license classes for commercial and large vehicles drivers. With a class B CDL license, you are allowed to drive heavy commercial trucks. The trucks may have attached cargo area weighing more than 26,000 pounds. You also are licensed to tag detached cargo vehicles by towing as long as they weight less than 10,000 pounds. Not all schools have the facilities to deliver the necessary skills for the demands of such a job.

Coach drivers and those handling heavy delivery trucks must possess Class A CDL license. The trucks and buses in this category are those weighing more than 20,000 pounds. Drivers of intra and interstate trucks must possess this license. This license ensures that you get requisite skills to navigate the vehicle safely under all circumstances. This is necessary to ensure the safety of driver, cargo and vehicle.

Acquiring the CDL license opens up a host of employment opportunities in different fields. Some of these opportunities include hauling special cargo, furniture delivery, heavy commercial trailers and tractors and being a local driver. It is also a chance to be an instructor at a training facility, be a dispatcher, work for delivery and courier companies or join the cement and production industries.

There is a special test administered after attending training at a school that is certified by the state. The tests are technical and will prove impossible to pass if you did not get proper training. Employers also demand skills demonstration before hiring such drivers. Failure to acquire the skills from an approved training facility reduces your chances of employment. It also exposes you to danger on the road.

The cost of training depends on the school. For the two classes of CDL, the cost ranges between 160 dollars and as high as 300 dollars per hour. Some institutions offer wider ranging packages like clusters of two hours and additional skills. Since the course is offered after basic driving lessons, you will be through in very few hours. A separate fee is charged for the test.

As a coach driver, you will be required to perform several duties depending on your work station. It is your responsibility to report all traffic accidents in writing immediately they occur. You are also required to operate the vehicle as directed by the administration. Some directions may be written while others are oral. The interior of your bus should also be maintained clean and safe. Stick to designated route and adhere to driving policies.

The starting salary for bus drivers is around 15 dollars per hour. It may come with allowances depending on your work environment. The career progression path includes taking charge of logistics as a manager, supervisor, dispatcher, etc. You may also work as a self employed driver.
