Notes On Texas CDL Requirements

By Martha Thompson

CDL can be defined as form of driving license which any person intending to transport intrastate and interstate commerce should apply for or have. To acquire this document, there are a series of requirements that should be fully met. With exceptions of mopeds as well as motorcycles, persons holding valid CDLs have the liberty to drive whatever types of vehicles whose licenses allow, including personal vehicles. Texas CDL requirements have to be complied with, before CDL is issued.

Any vehicle that requires to be endorsed, for example school bus, vehicles carrying hazardous materials, and any other, cannot be driven if the proper endorsements do not appear on their CDL. This is a very stringent rule that applies in all parts of Texas, and anybody that contravenes it violates the law and can be charged in a court of law. It is thus important to abide by this provision.

Vehicles that are entitled to DCL licenses are those that carry an upwards of 26000 pounds of gross weight rating. Additionally, those that carry an upward of 16 passengers should also be driven with the possession of the said commercial driving certification. It is a driving offence to drive a vehicle that surpasses these stipulations, without valid driving commercial documentations.

There are several things that are considered when one is applying for this commercial driver license. First and foremost, applicants are required to apply in person and not represented by another party. The appropriate application process should also be duly completed. Another requirement is present identity verification documents, for example ID or passports, to verify US citizenship or lawful presence. Further, Texas residency verification documents are also needed. Social Security Numbers should also be presented, failure to which the CDL cannot be issued.

Commercial Learning Permits will be given to the drivers applying to drive commercial vehicles. CLPs must be possessed for not less than fourteen days before one is allowed to take CDL skill-testing assessments. This is applicable to original applicants, grade modifications as well as adding endorsements that require tests. It is also important to note the sequence of the exams that are administered. The pre-trip alongside the basic skill evaluations should be optimally completed before the road skill evaluations are executed.

Alongside that, you must present a legitimate Social Security Number. This is paramount, since you cannot be issued with CDL if you do not present a working social security number. Another prerequisite is meeting the self-certifications of health or medical status. You may be required to present a valid medical examiner certificate, depending on the kind of certification. Foreigners are also expected to meet non-domicile or resident commercial requirements.

Noteworthy also, you should also pass not only the vision evaluation, but also other knowledge and skill evaluations for appropriate license, endorsements included. This also goes a long way in determining a successful application.

In addition, there are other extra basic skill evaluation maneuvers that should be passed. The last test is the road test change, which is the increase in number of maneuvers that are performed in the course of the road test. To acquire a CDL in Texas, these tests must be passed, since they are part of the requirements.
