The Commercial Driver License And How To Get It

By Walter Kennedy

There are different qualifications needed in order to drive a commercial vehicle like trucks and buses. While the base qualifications are simple, there is still a whole process to go through to get the right certification to drive these vehicles. The regular class D license is not enough, but it is one of the requirements for eligibility for the special certification.

Different vehicles require varying classes of licensure. These are also different for each state. Commercial driver license NJ qualifications and are not the same from CA. A driver will need a CDL to drive a limousine and a passenger van while the one on another state may not.

There is a required age depending on what state the applicant is from and where he plans to handle. For applicants that only plan to drive within the state, one must be at least 18 years old. Interstate driving requires someone to be at least 21. By default, a CDL candidate must already have a class D license.

The licensing process does not come for free. Identify how much needs to be paid for the knowledge tests, road tests, endorsements and so on. These endorsements can only be given once the CDL has already been obtained. Endorsements allow the driver to transport different types of vehicles and what they carry. There are different endorsements for those who plan to operate passenger vehicles and a truck that carrieshazardous materials.

A handbook is given for the applicants to study. The contents of this book is what comes out of the knowledge test which is the first exam that the applicants take. The state website typically provides a PDF file of this handbook. This exam needs to be passed in order to proceed to the next step.

Qualification for a learner permit will require a six point ID verification process. All necessary legal information needs to be verified by the presiding authorities in the agency. Said Applicant then goes to the MVC or the Motor Vehicle Commission where they hand out a form the needs to be filled out with the previously mention legal information. Once this is done, the form can then be submitted and the applicant then moves to the rest of the certification process

If the candidate passes his knowledge test, he is now eligible for their CDL learners permit or the CLP. This allows CLP holder to practice driving the vehicle they want licensure for. There are classes A, B, and C for CDL holders. Identifying which class the potential license holder belongs to is dependent on the vehicle they plan to handle.

The learner permit or CLP has restrictions that only allow the holder to handle the industrial vehicle of his choice as a pretest practice for 180 days. The CLP holder is only allowed to drive these vehicles in state public roads, while being accompanied by an full CDL holder. When the CLP expires the holder has a 20 day waiting time before they can take the road exam. This is usually used for taking extra training lessons.

The applicant can schedule the final road test once they are prepared to take it. Some states, like New Jersey, allow online scheduling for the test while other states others do not. Once the candidate has passed the road test they can now claim their official permit at the MVC agency.
